Cafe Shanti, Lincoln

New favourite place to eat alert! Just a shame I don’t live in Lincoln, if I did this would definitely become my local. My brother lives near Lincoln, we thought we’d have lunch on the way to see him. I have a feeling I’ll be visiting a lot more from now on.

Cafe Shanti is definitely cosy, there’s always a risk with small cafes/restaurants that it could feel like all eyes are on you but they couldn’t have been warmer. As soon as we stepped in we were greeted and seated, feeling like a close hippy friend had invited us round for tea in their cool house.

The menu felt like it was mainly vegan and had loads of choice. If you’re a tea lover this is the place for you, I ran out of fingers counting the selection. Suppose I could have used my toes, bare feet would have probably suited the scenery.

I went for the lasagne which was spinach and mushroom on this particular day. It came with salad and sweet potato chips with a vegan garlic mayonnaise. I was in heaven. My slightly fussy, meat eating wife even found a few things on the menu she was happy with, this is uncommon for her in any restaurant so I was impressed. She had the halloumi fries (still need to work on her) and couscous and really enjoyed it.

We were both stuffed by this point but I was so excited that every cake on the menu was vegan that I had to find room for more. You can’t have cake without a hot drink so I had to try the “Shanti Warmer”. This is hot milk (I went for soy, almond also available) with a shot of ginger or vanilla (vanilla for me) and some cinnamon. This would be the perfect cure on a wet, windy, winter day. Again there was a choice of five or six different cakes. We ended up choosing the caramel cake and a slice of chocolate orange and oreo cake, I’m dribbling thinking about it! They were both gorgeous, I think you’d need to be a cake expert to tell there was no dairy in them.

Just the atmosphere was enough for an enjoyable experience. I enjoyed hearing a lady ask for the fal-eh-fell *insert smug vegan chortling here*. You could hear friendly chatter coming from the kitchen. Student Sarah from Lincoln, your boyfriend was going to order the halloumi! In his defence it’s likely he was trying to impress his man friend who had a beard (I point out the beard so you can imagine his manliness was threatened). He ended up going for a burger so don’t dump him yet. He came in to pick up a cake so I guess if you ask them nicely they can make vegan cakes for birthdays and such too.

Now I don’t know if this is the difference between Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire but I couldn’t believe how cheap it was. There’s no way we could get that amount of food and drink at that price round our way. Maybe I need to think about moving.

So if you find yourself wandering around Lincolnshire take yourself into Lincoln and get a delicious meal whether you’re vegan or not and say hi from me! (they won’t have a clue who you’re talking about)
